About the Project

Brady approached me in 2019 with the desire for a logo and branding for his new landscaping business.  He wanted a logo that displayed landscape as well as his last name, Prater.

I started out researching landscaping brands and their corresponding logos.  I then began to sketch out rough ideas for what Brady's logo could look like.  We bounced these ideas back and forther, and he really enjoyed the look of a circular or badge-shaped logo.  This drove me to the first 3 drafts as shown on the left.

Of these 3, both Brady and I liked the middle logo the best, but wanted to tweek it further to add a few elements.  I had the idea of making the logo a cross-section of the ground, with Prater being the horizon line.  Everything above "Prater" would be grass and sky, and everything below would be brown earth.

To take this a step further, I incorporated a green plant coming up from the word Prater, with the stem having a shape of "P" to represent the brand name.  The logo arches into an ellipse shape, with the upper half representing the sun and the lower half forming the shape of a shovel driving into the earth.

Grass placed here to show the logo as a cross-section between ground and sky, implying the work Prater does.  I eventually removed this from the logo to keep things simple.  I did come back to this in the print materials, however.

The overall shape of the logo was to be circular or elliptical in nature.  I went back and forth between incorporating the actual shovel spade, or just the shape of the shovel spade.  I eventually decided to keep the shovel absent from the final design

The "handle" of the shovel curls into the shape of a P, also doubling as the stem of the plant.  The P ties into Prater, the name of the business.

Shovel shape on the bottom-half of the logo.  Either use actual shovel imagery, or just incorporate the shape of the spade.

Digitized Revisions

Logo 3-100.jpg
Logo 1-100.jpg

These were the original 3 logos I digitized from my final sketch.  Each of these logos incorporates the shape of a shovel, the company name & description, as well as a landscape element below the mid-line, and a plant with a p-shaped stem above the mid-line.

The logo on the far-right is the final logo I proceeded with.  The yellow arch represents the sun, and tied in another color for the logo and scheme.  The shape of the arch balances the logo's top half and bottom half, as the sun contrasts with the shovel-shape of the bottom half of the logo.

Final Deliverables

Along with a new logo and color scheme, I presented letterhead, business cards, and a tri-fold brochure design for Brady.  Each of these products used the logo and the corresponding theme, with several illustrative elements added.  The lawn-mowing figure was done in Illustrator, and added space and depth I needed for the letterhead, business card, and tri-fold brochure.
